13 Sep Skills for Success Day addresses important life skills for Canadians
Literacy provides an opportunity to unlock a world of possibilities. Having adequate literacy skills means being able to understand, evaluate, use, and engage with written texts. People with solid literacy skills experience much higher rates of employment than people with low literacy skills. They also receive higher incomes.
Literacy extends far beyond reading and writing. In fact, the Government of Canada has identified a set of Skills for Success – the foundation for all other skills and enable people to evolve and adapt to change at work, in the community, and at home. These skills include: Reading, Writing, Numeracy, Digital, Problem Solving, Communication, Collaboration, Adaptability, Creativity and Innovation. The Skills for Success are used in every job to varying degrees and at different levels of complexity.
On September 22, 2022, Skills for Success Day will take place across the country to raise awareness about the importance of these key skills needed for learning, work, and life. Founded in 2010 by ABC Life Literacy Canada, a national literacy organization, the day encourages Canadians to improve upon these important skills.
Everyone benefits from having these skills. They help you to get a job, progress at your current job, and change jobs. These skills also help you become an active member of your community and succeed in learning. Skills for Success are skills that help Canadians in a quickly changing world.
In Canada, the number of people who struggle with literacy skills has increased to almost one in two during the past decade. As a result, these Canadians may be unable to meet the skills demands required in today’s workforce. Improving the skills of workers can have a major impact on business bottom lines. Furthermore, individuals who have these skills are more likely to have higher salaries, better overall health and higher levels of participation in their community.
