03 Apr New financial literacy workbooks available for people with diverse abilities
ABC Life Literacy Canada has just added three new workbooks to Money Matters for People with Diverse Abilities. The financial literacy program, which launched nationally in 2019, was designed for adults with various intellectual, verbal, physical and nonphysical capabilities. Each workbook is reflective of the learners that it is serving and has been written and designed in clear language.
The three new workbooks can be used by anyone teaching financial literacy programming as well as those learning at home, at their own pace. The workbooks cover the following topics:
1. How to use an ATM
- The parts of an ATM
- How to withdraw money from an ATM
- How to use an ATM safely
2. Understanding your paycheque
- How to understand your paycheque and pay stub
- Why money comes out of your paycheque
- How to tell how much money comes out of your paycheque
3. Money safety
- Online safety
- Phishing scams
- Identity theft
These workbooks come at a time when there is a lot of financial uncertainty due to COVID-19. As a result, ABC Life Literacy has made these new workbooks available online for free download so learners can improve their financial literacy skills from the comfort of their own home.
All workbooks can be accessed by literacy practitioners who sign up to host a workshop.
These new workbooks add to the existing three workbooks in the program, which cover ‘Opening a bank account’, ‘Ways to pay’ and ‘Needs, wants and spending plans’. An additional resource for caregivers “Money Matters for Caregivers” helps to encourage confidence and independence for a loved one.
Money Matters has been made possible through the support of founding sponsor TD Bank Group, through its corporate citizenship platform, The Ready Commitment. TD Bank Group’s fraud prevention team also helped to develop the ‘Money safety’ workbook.
