(Toronto, ON - September 23, 2011) - The pilot testing of Money Matters, a new financial literacy program for adults enrolled in literacy programs, has now been completed. The four pilot programs, which took place in Toronto, Kitchener and Hamilton this past summer, aimed to increase the numeracy and financial literacy skills of adult learners in four key areas:
- Budgeting
- Banking
- Credit and borrowing
- RESPs and savings
The results are in, and surveys show the program was a great success! Survey data indicated an impressive 40% increase in the number of people who say that are now “always” comfortable in dealing with banks and credit unions. 64% of respondents considered themselves to be more confident in making decisions about saving money after the training than before the training. 68% increased their confidence managing their money.
Money Matters, which will roll out nationally this fall, is perfect for adult literacy learners of all levels. Facilitated by a literacy practitioner with support from trained TD Bank Group volunteer tutors, Money Matters will provide learners with eight hours of real-world examples and activities on financial management.
As part of running a Money Matters program, literacy groups will receive calculators, pencils and Gail Vaz-Oxlade’s Good Reads book, Easy Money, for all learners, as well as a small honorarium.
