Media Literacy Week 2011 focuses on youth and the digital world

(Toronto, ON – November 7, 2011) - From November 7 to 11 Canada celebrates Media Literacy Week. The initiative debuted in 2006 to promote media literacy as a key component in the education of young people and to encourage the integration and practice of media education in Canadian homes, schools and communities.

The theme for this year is Digital Citizenship, which encourages young people to think about their online identities as well as their rights and duties as digital citizens.

The project makes a lot of sense in the 21st century. Modern technology and the Internet have brought about a true revolution, where children and adolescents are actively involved in this process that have changed their daily routines. Although they are increasingly immersed in media, constantly contributing with their thoughts, opinions and creativity, young people are doing this largely without guidance and often without reflecting on its consequences.

Being media literate allows youth to develop knowledge, values and a range of critical thinking, communications and information management skills, all of which will help them better produce and select what they choose to disseminate to a vast world wide digital audience.

ABC Life Literacy Canada supports several literacy initiatives. Visit the Media Literacy Week website for ideas on how to get involved in this great initiative!
