Life Literacy Ambassador gets into the holiday spirit with adult learners

(Toronto, ON – December 12, 2011) - Life Literacy Ambassador Lesra Martin has truly gotten into the holiday spirit – he has kindly agreed to donate 25 copies of his book, The Power of a Promise, to adults in two Toronto-based literacy programs this month.

Rosalind Goldsmith, adult literacy instructor at the Bickford Centre and Oakwood Collegiate, took some of her students to see Martin speak at a fundraising event held by the Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy back in September. The event featured a screening of National Film Board documentary The Journey of Lesra Martin followed by Martin’s own inspiring speech about his journey – from dealing with literacy challenges as a teen in Brooklyn, New York, to becoming a respected lawyer and motivational speaker.

Goldsmith and learners from the Bickford Centre were enthralled with Martin’s inspirational message. While students from Oakwood Collegiate could not attend the fundraiser, they expressed interest in knowing more about Lesra Martin’s amazing story. Through the help of ABC Life Literacy Canada, 25 adult learners from both literacy programs will receive a copy of his book. In addition, Martin will address the class at Oakwood Collegiate via conference call from his Kamloops, B.C. home, and share some motivational words in hopes of inspiring them to continue their studies and improve their lives.

Michelle Smith is one of the lucky individuals who will receive a book. She had already started reading a borrowed copy of The Power of a Promise, but had to return it to the owner before she could finish it. Nevertheless, the first few pages she had the chance to read were enough to get her motivated to improve her literacy skills even more in the upcoming year.

“I was really inspired by the book. The main thing I got from it is that you have to be ready to learn and always stay positive. You have the power, you have the will”.

You can get into the holiday spirit too! Think outside the gift box this season and donate to ABC Life Literacy Canada at http://abclifeliteracy.ca/donate.
