The impact an adult-integrated learning program has on an individual is tremendous. Literacy programs throughout community centres, libraries and schools across Canada are helping adults take a first step towards achieving their goals.
From coast to coast to coast across Canada, these unsung heroes are making a difference in the lives of Canadian adults who are choosing to make a change and improve their literacy skills. For these programs and individuals, ABC Life Literacy Canada is pleased to offer the new Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life Literacy Innovation Award.
“We are pleased to have established this award alongside ABC Life Literacy Canada to highlight the tremendous work being done by individuals and organizations across Canada,” said Jan Belanger, Assistant Vice-President, Community Affairs, Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life. “The award allows for the sharing of best practices and innovations among organizations looking to advance literacy skills and better the lives of adult learners.”
Honouring innovative adult or adult-integrated family literacy programs in communities across Canada, the winning program will receive $20,000 that can be used to further develop or fund their programs. Four other top submissions may also be selected to receive $5,000 each. This award will go to an adult focused literacy program making an impact in their community, and can serve as a model for other organizations to adopt.
Adult literacy programs are having a very real impact on people like Vera, an adult learner who recognizes the importance of adult literacy organizations. When Vera was laid off from her job, she decided this was an opportunity to pursue a career in a different field. She realized her skills needed some upgrading and took the initiative to attend a literacy group in Waterloo. Since joining the program a year ago, Vera is much closer to starting her new career.
Communities across Canada witness the positive impact when encouraging adults to embrace lifelong learning. Individuals become more engaged in life, be it at work or in their community and increase their self-confidence.
