Holidays offer an opportunity to help those that are struggling to read this story

(Toronto, ON - December 5, 2011) - The holiday season reminds us of renewal, love and hope - three beautiful words that have special significance to those whose lives have been changed by literacy. Individuals like Wendy, Oscar, Martin and Joanne who once struggled to understand words, numbers and symbols now have the ability to communicate better, help their children with their homework, participate fully in their communities, and produce more consciously in their workplace.

Literacy changes lives in many ways. Strong literacy skills are linked to work achievement, positive parenting, personal growth, better health and increased self-esteem. Unfortunately, nine million Canadian adults are challenged with low literacy, which hinders their ability to deal with the demands of everyday life. An Ipsos Reid study conducted in 2009 shows that 90 per cent of Canadians agree that improving literacy levels in the country is key to improving its economy. You can help make that change.

While we reflect during the holidays, let us not forget those who might not have had the chance to get a good education and, consequently, seize great opportunities in life. By donating to ABC Life Literacy Canada you are giving Canadians the gift of learning by helping us support literacy programs and initiatives such as LEARN, Family Literacy Day, Money Matters, Financial Literacy Week and Good Reads

We envision a Canada where everyone has the skills they need to live a fully engaged life. What about you?  Pledge your support of others by donating to ABC Life Literacy Canada. Your contribution, no matter the size, means the world to millions of people who need a helping hand.
