Rabindranath Maharaj wins Toronto Book Award for The Amazing Absorbing Boy

(Toronto, ON – October 18, 2011) ABC Life Literacy Canada is pleased to congratulate Good Reads® author Rabindranath Maharaj for winning the Toronto Book Award for his novel The Amazing Absorbing Boy. Maharaj received the award on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at an event hosted at the Toronto Reference Library. This year marks the 37th anniversary of the Toronto Book Award.

It has been a successful year for Maharaj who won the 2011 Trillium English Language Fiction Prize for the same novel.

The Amazing Absorbing Boy is a story about Samuel, a 17 year old boy who is sent to live with his father in Toronto after his mother passes away in their native Trinidad. Samuel is lonely in the big city, but fondly remembers superheroes from home, which helps him as he embarks on exploring Toronto and all the city has to offer.

Maharaj is the author of five novels and three short story collections, including the Good Reads book The Picture of Nobody. Over the years Maharaj has been a teacher, mentor for young writers and is now an instructor at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. He is a true advocate for lifelong learning and recognizes the importance of literacy in our everyday lives.

Congratulations Maharaj on such a remarkable award and success with The Amazing Absorbing Boy!
