Good Reads offer options to adult learners

A hit from the moment it was released in September 2010 as part of the new Good Reads series, Easy Money has been a consistent Top 10 bestseller in Canada. This easy-to-understand guide to personal finance, written for adult literacy learners, is reaching a wider audience who also appreciate the book’s clear language and simple structure. The retail success of Easy Money can be credited to the distribution support of publisher HarperCollins Canada, whose president is a long-time board member of ABC Life Literacy Canada.

Easy Money is one of six new Good Reads books. The goal for Good Reads is to provide engaging and accessible Canadian-authored books to encourage reading enjoyment and success for adult learners. Applauded by the literacy field and adult learners, Good Reads books are having a positive impact on adult learners across the country as noted from the handful of reader comments received to date.

With original short novels and non-fiction, Good Reads is introducing adult learners to some of Canada’s bestselling authors, including Gail Anderson-Dargatz, Deborah Ellis, Maureen Jennings, Rabindranath Maharaj and Louise Penny.

As accessible adult stories written at a Grade 3 to 6 level with strong plots and characters, readers are immediately drawn into Good Reads books. Literacy practitioners have access to reading guides for each book that provide discussion questions and learner exercises for enhancing participation and understanding.

Good Reads is a joint initiative between ABC Life Literacy Canada and literacy specialist publisher Grass Roots Press, with support from the Government of Canada.

Stay tuned for news on new titles being developed for launch later this year.
