Good Reads author wins Trillium Book Award

(Toronto, ON – June 17, 2011) - ABC Life Literacy Canada congratulates author Rabindranath Maharaj for winning the 2011 Trillium Book Award for The Amazing Absorbing Boy.

In addition to writing books such as A Perfect Pledge, Homer in Flight, The Interloper, and The Amazing Absorbing Boy, Maharaj also lent his time and talents to adult literacy through the Good Reads series.

Good Reads is a series of original engaging fiction and non-fiction books for adult learners who are developing their reading ability.  Maharaj was one of six authors to participate in the inaugural year of the series with The Picture of Nobody.

A former high school teacher and guest lecturer, Rabindranath understands the importance of reading and writing as key foundational skills in the lives of all Canadians and was excited to lend his support to a book series which engaged adult literacy learners through adult-themed stories.

The Picture of Nobody is the story of a young man of Ismaili Muslim descent living in Ajax, ON who suddenly has his world turned upside down after a terrorist attack in nearby Toronto.  No one noticed him before and now he is a target of racism and bullying. In spite, Tommy commits an act of revenge against the group’s ringleader.
