Fun Literacy Tips for Spring

Spring is officially here – and what better time to improve your literacy skills! Here are some fun ideas to help you sharpen your literacy skills this season:

  1. Write a newsy email or letter to a friend or family member that you have lost touch with.
  2. Surf the net to find information on your favourite spring activities, such as gardening, golf or travelling.
  3. Make it a goal to visit the library once a week.
  4. Sit outside on a nice day and do the daily crossword puzzle or read a magazine or newspaper.
  5. Take a skills-upgrading course at your local literacy organization.
  6. Volunteer at your local literacy organization. April is National Volunteer Month!
  7. Attend a garage sale and purchase gently used books and magazines as a cost-effective way to continuously add to your library.
  8. Take a family road trip. Read signs, billboards and licence plates together and show your children the proper way to read a map.
  9. Organize your bookshelf and take previously read books to a used bookstore to exchange them for classics or new releases.
  10. Following recipes is a great way to improve reading and math skills. Check out a new recipe to make a yummy, spring salad.
