Inspiring Canadians’ confidence in math and money skills

(Toronto, ON – June 21, 2011) - In a national Ipsos Reid survey conducted on behalf of ABC Life Literacy Canada last month, it was revealed that six in 10 Canadians say they can use help with their financial management skills.

ABC Life Literacy Canada wants to inspire all Canadians to increase their financial literacy and math skills. To that end, as part of a national communications strategy supporting Financial Literacy Week with founding sponsor TD Bank Group, taking place from October 30 – November 5, 2011, ABC Life Literacy Canada will debut a Financial Literacy Week e-newsletter in July that will highlight how Canadians can celebrate and be engaged in activities taking place throughout the country.

We encourage organizations, schools, libraries, community centres and other literacy organizations, in addition to the general population, to register for the e-newsletter, which will help planning for, and participating in financial literacy themed activities during Financial Literacy Week.

“We look forward to helping Canadians have fun with numbers and math,” commented ABC Life Literacy Canada president Margaret Eaton. “Understanding simple math processes is a foundational skill everyone needs in order to have confidence when dealing with finances.  We hope to eliminate any stigma around working with numbers and infuse a sense of enjoyment to budgeting, saving and living smartly within our means.”

Information you can expect to receive includes financial learning resources, advance notice of new online content, access to register an event or review event listings detailing learning opportunities in your area as well as exclusive math and money tips.

Financial Literacy Week will engage Canadians through activity, dialogue and action ultimately building increased confidence with day-to-day tasks involving money and numbers.

In the coming weeks, ABC Life Literacy Canada will also unveil a new Financial Literacy Week website designed to continue the discussion with Canadians about the simple steps they can take to increase their financial literacy and math skills.  Financial learning resources and event registrations will be featured.
