As local communities across Canada prepare to host Family Literacy Day events, volunteer to help others play and learn
(Toronto, ON – January 20, 2011) – As the 13th annual Family Literacy Day® approaches on January 27, ABC Life Literacy Canada is encouraging families and communities to play and learn together by participating in literacy-related events and activities happening across the country.
Another way Canadians can participate in Family Literacy Day is to volunteer. It is a great opportunity to get involved in your community and a chance to open a world of possibilities for parents and children by helping them learn. Volunteer opportunities at Family Literacy Day events can include storytelling, registration and supervising game stations.
“We commend the many organizations across Canada that have already registered their Family Literacy Day events,” said Margaret Eaton, president of ABC Life Literacy Canada. “Volunteering at a local Family Literacy Day event is a positive way for Canadians to help boost the confidence and literacy skills in others.”
This year’s Family Literacy Day theme is Play for Literacy, encouraging Canadians to enjoy the carefree act of playing through games and activities in order to develop literacy and numeracy development and comprehension. Hundreds of schools, libraries, literacy organizations and community groups are hosting Family Literacy Day events with fun activities, such as board games, storytelling sessions, arts and crafts, celebrity guests, and prizes.
