Scholastic Canada authors support Family Literacy Day at community events across country

(Toronto, ON – January 23, 2012) – On Friday, January 27 thousands of families across the country will take part in Family Literacy Day - Canada’s largest family literacy initiative. Launched in 1999 by ABC Life Literacy Canada, Family Literacy Day encourages adults and children to practise their literacy skills by engaging in at least 15 minutes of learning activities every day.

Over the past 14 years, Canadians from coast to coast have embraced the message of family literacy and participated in various community events or created their own learning moments at home.

Joining the movement this year are five Scholastic Canada authors who are determined to show families how to make literacy and learning fun. These authors will visit a Family Literacy Day event within their communities to read to families, talk to parents about practising family literacy at home and show children that learning is fun.

“Scholastic Canada is happy to have our authors participating in Family Literacy Day events across the country,” said Diane Kerner, Vice-President of Publishing at Scholastic Canada. “As a publisher whose mission is to foster a love of reading, we are pleased that we can help reach families with a message about the importance of literacy and encourage them to embrace learning together.”

Authors supporting the initiative are:

Julie Lawson, Victoria, B.C.- Author of Ghosts of the Titanic and Dear Canada: No Safe Harbour

Joel Sutherland, Courtice, ON– Author of Be a Writing Superstar and Frozen Blood

Vikki VanSickle, Toronto, ON– Author of Words That Start With B and Love is a Four-Letter Word

Larry Verstraete, Winnipeg, MB– Author of At the Edge: Daring Acts in Desperate Times and Case Files: 40 Murders and Mysteries Solved by Science

Nancy Wilcox-Richards, Hebbville, NS– Author of How to Handle a Bully and How to Outplay a Bully

In addition to these author events, hundreds more Family Literacy Day events are taking place at literacy groups, schools, libraries and community centres across Canada in support of the initiative.

Scholastic Canada has been a proud supporter of Family Literacy Day for many years. The addition of five new authors to the campaign further highlights their commitment to the cause and all Canadians.
