Family Literacy Day engages families across Canada

Toronto, Ontario (January 29, 2013) -- Last weekend, Canadians across the country celebrated the 15th anniversary of Family Literacy Day. Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

To celebrate the 15th year, the theme for this year’s celebration was, “15 minutes of fun!” Taking just 15 minutes a day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development. Even just 15 minutes can improve a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.

This year’s Family Literacy Day was marked by local events held all across the country. In Toronto, Ont. the Ontario Science Centre held a full day of literacy programming, with guest appearances by many celebrated authors, including: Honorary Chair of Family Literacy Day Robert Munsch, children’s author Barbara Reid and bestselling author Wayson Choy.

In Charlottetown, P.E.I. the Confederation Centre Art Gallery hosted a Family Literacy Day event to celebrate, “15 minutes of fun”. There was music, face painting, a puppet show, computer and art games and of course, a reading by local authors.

Meanwhile kindergarten students in Clarington, Ont. at Central Public School enjoyed stories and activities about winter hibernation in honour of Family Literacy Day. Parents also received a Journey to Learning passport in early January, with a variety of fun, 15-minute literacy activities for home.

In Kamloops, B.C. at the Henry Grube Education Centre welcomed hundreds of moms, dads, sons and daughters, grandparents, aunts and uncles into their crowded facility to enjoy face painting, colouring, storytelling and a variety of other fun activities.

The Northern United Place in Yellowknife, N.W.T. partnered with the Literacy Outreach Centre to host a full day of Family Literacy Day activities, centered on the, “15 minutes of fun” theme. The day included crafts and activities for families and children.
