Tournament Date: June 21, 2010

The PGI in Manitoba is a premier golf tournament. Held at the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club, twenty minutes north of Winnipeg and home to the Manitoba Classic, this tournament has attracted some of the best-known golfers to the cause - including pro golfer Mike Weir! The Manitoba PGI tournament format is a Texas Scramble with a shotgun start following lunch and music under the trees in front of the club house.

Maria Goncalves, adult literacy learner and recipient of The Co-operators Learner Achievement Award, shares her learning story with PGI attendees. Maria is a member of Literacy Partners of Manitoba’s Learner Speakers’ Bureau which is supported by funds raised at the annual tournament.

Many activities, food and fun greet the golfers along the course. At the end of their game, golfers return to the clubhouse, greeted by:

  • Music
  • A delicious dinner
  • A speech from the winner of The Co-operators Learner Achievement Award
  • An entertaining performance from the golf day’s Poet Laureate
  • A silent auction
  • Various draws and prizes

The funds raised provide bursaries to literacy learners throughout the province. Specifically, they support Literacy Partners of Manitoba’s (LPM) Learner Speakers’ Bureau, whose services include learner’s workshops on writing and public speaking.
