PGI Newfoundland

Dennis Luther, 2007 winner of The Co-operators Learner Achievement Award (left) and fellow golfer Rob McLennan enjoy a great day on the greens.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the PGI is held at the Bally Haly Golf Course in St. John’s in the second week of June each year. Otherwise known as ‘spring planting week,’ when the last chance of frost in the ground has passed, golfers take the opportunity to get out to their first – and favourite – tournament of the year.

PGI Newfoundland and Labrador has three components over two days. A Family Literacy Festival, celebrating the value of early and lifelong learning, kicks off the activities. As day turns to evening, we host the Night Before Event to celebrate the successes of The Telegram Learner Achievement Award winner and to recognize and entertain the many PGI sponsors and supporters. And then it’s up early the next day to answer the call of the greens: the Golf Tournament itself, with its range of team challenges and camaraderie, hole-sponsored activities, prizes – and surprises – along the way!

A banquet lunch rounds out the golf day activities, and then it is all over…except, of course, that this golf week is also iceberg-alley week, when outside the St. John’s narrows you will see the dance of icebergs and whales. Best you come and see this one for yourselves!
