Family Literacy Day was created in 1999 by ABC Life Literacy Canada to encourage families to read and learn together. Every year on January 27, thousands of Canadians take part in Family Literacy Day events and activities at schools, libraries, community centres, corporations and literacy organizations.

Literacy is more than books. There are many ways to strengthen your literacy skills - all it takes is practicing for 15 minutes every day. Reading, writing, playing a game, following a recipe or even singing a song all help prepare children for challenges ahead and sharpen skills for adults. Participate in the Family Literacy Day 2011 theme and Play for Literacy! Play for Literacy includes all types of play that encourage literacy and numeracy - board games, card games and word games are just a few of the fun activities that promote reading, spelling and numeracy.

In celebration of Family Literacy Day (January 27, 2011), ABC Life Literacy Canada is pleased to once again present The Munsch at Home Contest! One lucky family will win a private home visit and a public reading at a location of their choice from renowned children's author and Honorary Chair of Family Literacy Day, Robert Munsch. In 2003, Canada’s best-selling children's author Robert Munsch became the Honorary Chair of Family Literacy Day. With a passion for literacy, Munsch has been a great spokesperson for Family Literacy Day. Munsch is the author of more than 50 children's books, including The Paper Bag Princess, Thomas's Snowsuit and Love You Forever.
