(Toronto, ON – March 1, 2012) – Are you a workplace literacy champion or visionary? This award may be for you! For the third year in a row, ABC Life Literacy Canada is pleased to announce its call for nominations to the Dr. Alan Middleton Workplace Literacy and Learning Award.
This national award, which made its debut in 2010, recognizes an individual for their outstanding achievement towards increasing workplace literacy and essential skills in their
community. Last year’s recipient was Jeannie Spence of Vancouver, B.C. for her creation of the Hastings Learning Centre at Hastings Racecourse. The honour was established to recognize the outstanding contribution of ABC Life Literacy Canada board member and former chair, Dr. Alan Middleton – a true champion for literacy.
“I am honoured to be affiliated with this award recognizing excellence in workplace literacy and essential skills,” says Dr. Middleton, the Executive Director of the Schulich Executive Education Centre at York University. “Low literacy has critical impact on Canada’s overall competitiveness and economy, and this award helps to showcase the immense value of investing in skills training in the workplace.”
Canadians are encouraged to nominate an individual in their workplace or community that goes above and beyond in bringing focus and access to workplace literacy and learning tools. To nominate someone, complete the online nomination form found at www.abclifeliteracy.ca before 5:00 p.m. EST on May 31, 2012.
Nominees can reflect individual employees, organization management including HR professionals and CEOs, and union and government representatives involved in workplace literacy and essential skills. A selection committee comprised of workplace literacy advisors, communication professionals and ABC Life Literacy Canada officials will evaluate all submissions and select a winner based on criteria including the individual’s community impact in the area of workplace literacy and essential skills, commitment, and leadership to workplace literacy.
The winner will be announced on September 27, 2012 at ABC Life Literacy Canada’s celebration of learning, Life Literacy Night. The event will feature other annual awards including the Peter Gzowski Life Literacy Fellowship and The Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C. Literacy Public Awareness Award.
