TORONTO, ON (JUNE 11, 2009) – As part of their Annual General Meeting held on June 10, ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation is pleased to announce that Bob Millar has been named the new Chair of the Board of Directors. A literacy advocate and board member since 2006, Millar is committed to helping ABC CANADA increase awareness about the adult literacy cause.
“I think it’s the right of every citizen in the country to become fully literate; it’s part of lifelong learning, and it’s part of being a productive member of society,” Millar said. “The more we’re able to learn, the more we’re able to contribute to our own lives and support our families and our communities.”
Millar, who now becomes the fifth Board Chair in ABC CANADA’s history, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. With 35 years of experience in sales, marketing and strategic planning, Millar has held senior roles for companies such as Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Nabisco and ConAgra. Most recently, Millar was the President of CKF Inc. and was also on the Board of Directors of Food and Consumer Products of Canada (FCPC) and Corporations Sharing Responsibility (CSR).
Millar will take over for Alan Middleton, who continues on the Board. Middleton, Chair since 2003 and a board member since 2001, is marketing professor and Executive Director of the Schulich Executive Education Centre (SEEC) at York University. Middleton’s outstanding contribution to ABC CANADA will be formally recognized in a new award – The Alan Middleton Workplace Literacy and Learning Award. The annual award beginning in 2009 will recognize an individual for their outstanding contribution to increasing the literacy and numeracy skills of employees through workplace education programs. Further news concerning the award will be announced later this year.
“Over his six-year term Alan has worked tirelessly to raise awareness for the literacy cause in Canada. We are delighted that he will continue to provide his talents and leadership through our board and committees,” says Margaret Eaton, President, ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation. “The board and staff are thrilled to officially welcome Bob to his new role as Board Chair. His trusted leadership and management experience add major value as we work to elevate the adult literacy cause to new heights.”
ABC CANADA also appointed Jim Warrington, a board member since May 2006, to the role of Vice-Chair. Warrington is currently President and Strategy Leader of Fantail Communications Inc. and brings over 30 years of experience in integrated communications and marketing consulting to ABC CANADA.
